This monument at Wat Phnom honors the historical event in 1907 when Cambodia got back the territories which represent today the provinces of Siem Reap and Battambang from Thailand. King Sisowath sits in golden colour centrally on the throne: on the left is an Indochinese soldier with a tricolour French flag: on the right three girls offer King Sisowath a prasat, a stupa and a stick, the symbols of the reunited provinces Siem Reap, Sisophon and Battambang. An impressive visualisation of the history.
King Sisowath is faced to the South and he can overlook the Norodom Boulevard and he can see the Independence Monument at the end of the Boulevard. What did he see before the the Independence Monument was built in 1958? I don’t know.
